I’ve heard from several people that taking an Asprin while they were having a heart attack saved their lives, but they never told me how it helps save you..

Perhaps one of you can tell me the info. Thanks!

Heart attack?

Sabretooth asked:

I believe that a heart attack means death of cardiac tissue.
I do not think that it has to mean to necrosis due to lack of oxygen, but could be due to other things such as electrical damage.

So an arrythmias attack that nearly kills someone that leads to perminant damage is a form of heart attack but not a ‘myocardial infarction’.

What is the odd of surviving one?

Aimee Whitfill asked:

Coronary heart disease and its ensuing heart attacks have many risk factors identified by extensive research. Some of these factors are controllable, and some are not. The more risk factors you have, the greater your chances of suffering from a heart attack. Are you at risk? Below, read about five heart attack risk factors you can control.

Diabetes

Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to significant heart damage. If you have diabetes, make sure you eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and routinely take your medication prescribed by your doctor to control blood sugar levels.

Obesity/Physical inactivity

Get off the couch and move! A sedentary lifestyle lacking in sufficient exercise increases the chance for developing coronary heart disease. Regular exercise helps the heart and can also control obesity, blood cholesterol, and blood pressure, all of which add to your risk for having a heart attack. Studies have shown that high levels of body fat, especially around the waist, lead to an increased risk of developing heart disease. Extra weight increases the heart’s workload, so by losing as few as 10 pounds, you can lower your risk. Even just 30 minutes of exercise per day can be beneficial. Consult your doctor to ask about diet and exercise plans to help you reach a healthy weight.

Tobacco use

While stopping smoking is not easy, it is extremely important to your heart’s health, because cigarette smoking is a major cause of coronary heart disease. Indeed, smokers develop heart disease at two to four times the rate of nonsmokers. Cigarette smoking increases blood pressure and the blood’s tendency to clot and decreases good blood cholesterol. Exposure to other people’s tobacco smoke can also increase the risk, even in nonsmokers. More importantly, when smoking is combined with other factors, your chances of having a heart attack go up dramatically.

Psychosocial factors

Learning to control stress and the way you respond to it can be in important contributing factor to developing heart disease. Stress and anger may also influence other factors, because they may cause people to overeat, begin smoking or smoke more than usual, drink alcohol to excess, or turn to illegal drugs, all of which contribute to heart disease. While we all face stress in our daily lives, research shows that meditation, deep breathing exercises, massage, anger management, and other relaxation techniques can help you to better deal with those stresses.

High blood pressure and high cholesterol

High blood pressure overworks your heart, causing it to thicken and become stiffer. When combined with high blood cholesterol, obesity, smoking, or diabetes, the risk of heart attack increases. Animal fats (or saturated fats) found in red meat, dairy and fried foods can all contribute to high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Salt is another culprit. Look for healthier options. A low-sodium diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and grains along with medication can be useful in lowering high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol. Also, incorporating foods containing plant sterols (for example, cholesterol-lowering margarine) can also help to lower blood cholesterol.

Unfortunately, heart disease usually exhibits no symptoms before a heart attack occurs; therefore, preventive screening is extremely important. Mobile screening companies offer easy, non-invasive tests to identify your risk of heart disease through determining if you have developed peripheral arterial disease, which leaves you four to six times more likely to die from a heart attack. Mobile screenings, usually held in local gyms, churches, or community centers, are extremely convenient, usually only taking a few minutes out of your busy day, and they can save your life.

Barb Hicks - Clivir Team asked:

A study of 515 women who had an acute heart attack (MI, Myocardial Infarction), reported symptoms that were not your typical heart symptoms. The most commonly reported symptoms were unusual fatigue, sleep disturbances, shortness of breath, indigestion, and anxiety.

Only 30% of the women who reported chest pain had reports of aching and tightness.  Women who experience symptoms of heart disease tend to ignore or deny that any discomfort exists.  Women are less likely to seek help early when symptoms of heart disease begin to manifest themselves. They figure if they are feeling tired, its because the week must have been particular busy, let alone the fact that she may be having problems sleeping.  The most remote thing from her mind is that she could be on the road to an impending heart attack, thus is less prone to get needed medical attention.

Statistics have shown that women have a higher risk for heart attack than men, due in part to changes in estrogen levels that take as she ages. Women who take birth control pills and smoke  are also at a higher risk.  In addition to this, as a woman ages, her risks for heart attack increase, and is more likely to succumb to heart disease.  Even if she suffers a heart attack while hospitalized, her chances of survival are less than that of a man.  Also, women tend to experience a cardiac event 10 years later than men do.  It is paramount for women to get educated and know their risks to prevent becoming a statistic.

Although a woman of any age can fall victim to a heart attack, having a family history of heart disease should be her first clue of what her risks involve.  Women need to realize that heart disease is their number one killer, and it is not just a disease of men. That is why its important for women to take charge of their health to know what her risks for heart disease are, and learn to recognize the signs and symptoms.

There are many options for treatment available, including the immediate opening of a blocked artery, restoring blood flow to the heart. Realizing the early symptoms of heart attack aids in the accuracy of the right diagnosis and the right treatment. Your health is your responsibility, so take care of yourself to ensure you live a healthy quality of life for as long as possible.

Jenny asked:

And angina pains?

I lost my husband due to a massive heart attack years ago, & I thought heart disease could be detected these days better than it was then.

I am somewhat of a band aid nurse, & I thought I knew some things about health, but I’ve learned lately due to a friend, that sometimes it masks itself & you cannot tell.

How can you tell if you have heart trouble? Is there anyone out there that has dealt with this? I thought that heart trouble was diagnosed easier than it was 10 years ago.

Thank you.

mocowiz asked:

To find your risk for a heart attack, check the boxes that apply to you:

A family history of early heart disease

(Father or brother diagnosed before age 55)

(Mother or sister diagnosed before age 65)

Age (Men 45 years or older;Women 55 years or older) High blood cholesterol High blood pressure One or more previous heart attacks, angina,

bypass surgery or angioplasty, stroke, or blockages in neck or leg arteries

Overweight Physical inactivity Cigarette smoking Diabetes

The more risk factors you have, the greater your risk for a heart attack.

How do I know if I am having a heart attack?

You may be having a heart attack if you feel any of these symptoms:

Chest discomfort or pain which lasts longer than 5 minutes AND is not relieved by rest or nitroglycerin AND feels like:

• pressure

• tightness

• squeezing

• crushing

• intense burning

• aching

In addition to the symptoms above, you may also have:

pain radiating to your:

• back

• shoulder

• neck

• jaw/teeth

• arm

• wrist

shortness of breath

dizziness

fainting

nausea (feeling sick to your stomach)

vomiting (throwing up)

unusual weakness

rapid and/or irregular heartbeat

sense of impending (coming) doom

DON’T DELAY!

If you are having a heart attack, getting medical attention right away can save your life! Getting medical care within one hour of your heart attack can lower the amount of heart muscle damaged.

Your symptoms may come on gradually (slowly). They may be vague or intermittent (start and stop).

• If you have angina, your heart attack symptoms may feel like your angina, but your heart attack symptoms may be stronger or last longer.

• If you have had a heart attack before, it may feel the same or different.

What should I do?

1. Stop what you are doing.

2. Sit or lie down.

3. If your doctor has prescribed nitroglycerin for you, place one nitroglycerin tablet under your tongue. Let it dissolve. Do not chew or swallow the pill. If your symptoms are not relieved in 3–5 minutes by nitroglycerin and rest, call 911 emergency services before you call anyone else.*

While you wait for the ambulance, you can continue to put one nitroglycerin tablet under your tongue every 5 minutes until your symptoms are relieved or until the ambulance arrives. If you do not have your nitroglycerin with you, call 911 emergency services before you call anyone else.*

4. If your doctor has not prescribed nitroglycerin for you, call 911 emergency services before you call anyone else.*

5. Do not drive yourself.

6. If you are not already taking daily aspirin, chew one adult-strength (325mg), uncoated

aspirin tablet if you have it and if you are not allergic to aspirin.
