What Is Heart Attack?

Filed Under heart attacks | Comments Off

heart attack
K Bakhru asked:

In case angina pectoris is ignored, and the disease is allowed to progress, the blockage in coronary arteries/or in its branches may go on increasing. The end-result of such a severe blockage in coronary arteries/branches would be that the blood supply of a part of heart muscle (supplied by the respective branch of coronary artery) may suddenly stop completely leading to severe damage / injury / necrosis / death of the affected portion of the heart muscle. However, the patient may directly go into the stage of heart attack without undergoing the stage of angina pectoris.

There may be only sudden spasm/narrowing/constriction of a coronary artery or its branches, either of a normal vessel or already involved coronary artery as a result of atherosclerosis. If the spasm is momentary, the patient may get only angina, but if it is a prolonged one, blood supply of a portion of heart muscle will suffer adversely, leading to a heart attack.

As regards clinical manifestations in a heart attack, the patient suddenly gets very severe pain in the centre of the chest (retrostemal) which may radiate to the left upper arm. In some cases, the pain may radiate to the back of the chest or towards the neck/lower jaw. In atypical cases, the pain may only be present in any of these areas i.e. back of the chest or the neck, etc.

Unlike the pain in angina, the pain in a heart attack is not relieved by rest, or by the administration of quick-acting coronary dilator drugs like glyceryl trinitrate. It may last more than half an hour, and may be accompanied by profuse sweating. The pain, truly speaking, may be highly unbearable, the worst the patient has ever suffered/experienced and may be only relieved by a strong analgesic/pain-killer. The patient may even get breathlessness/syncope/vertigo. Some patients may quickly go into shock called cardiogenic shock which becomes a grave emergency, and the patient may die if proper aid is not given. However, a patient may die even instantaneously if the heart attack is very severe. Hence, after the immediate first aid he should be shifted to the hospital. Such patients are treated in an intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital. The sooner the patient is given aid, the lesser will be the damage to the heart. For this reason, in some of the places, there are mobile cardiac care units. The van, duly-equipped, reaches the place of emergency in no time, and the patient receives proper treatment in the van itself on the way to hospital. If some fatal complications occur on the way, they are also tackled right in the van. Many lives can be saved with such timely treatment.

Hence, early diagnosis as well as treatment is important to save the life of a patient in a case of a heart attack. One must bear in mind the solitary important warning signal to detect cases of heart attack, in most of the cases, that whenever there is pain in chest/difficulty in breathing/syncope (transitory unconsciousness)/vertigo (dizziness), especially in middle age, the physician should be consulted for an immediate check-up. Further, cases of stable/unstable angina pectoris may precede a heart attack and thus should be considered a most important early warning signal.

Heart Attack Prevention Tips

heart attack
John Morris asked:

While some have to fight the battle of the bulge for mere shallow reasons, there are those who do all the dieting and exercising to reduce their cholesterol levels just to stay alive. And while cholesterol is an important component of the membranes of cells, playing an important part in maintaining brain synapses as well as in the immune system, it is also the largest cause of heart attack and stroke.

While it is great that most people who are suffering from high levels of cholesterol go to their dieticians to have their daily eating habits tweaked by following a strict meal plan in order to help them lower their cholesterol levels (hopefully back to normal levels), some people have really gone overboard, but if you feel compelled to lower your cholestorol, consult with your doctor, most doctors are fine with prescribing cholesterol reducing drugs.

When coupled with a healthy diet and regular exercise, the drugs can make quite a difference in your cholesterol levels, at least enough that your levels can be considered safe.

There are four kinds of cholesterol reducing drugs:

1. Bile acid

Sequesterants are cholesterol reducing drugs that aim to bind with the bile that is being produced by one’s liver. The bile helps out in our digestion as well as in the absorption of fats from the intestine. This cholesterol reducing drug blocks out the digestion of fats from the bile to help prevent the formation of cholesterol. Various cholesterol reducing drugs in this category are the following:

- Colestipol - Colestid - Coleseyalam - Welchol - Cholestyramine - Questran

2. Statins

Popularly known as statins, the HMG-CoA inhibitors are cholesterol reducing drugs that prevent the enzyme called 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-conenzyme, a reductase, from converting fat into cholesterol. This cholesterol reducing drug is seen as the most effective one in the market today and does some added good to one’s body as 2003 reports claim that people with heart failure but no coronary artery diseases receive great benefits from this in as early as 14 weeks.

Popular drugs from this cholesterol reducing drug group include:

- Simvastatin - Zocor - Cerivastatin - Baycol - Fluvastatin - Lescol - Lovastatin - Mevacor - Prevastatin - Pravachol - Atorvastatin - Lipitor

3. Fibric Acid

The cholesterol reducing drug called fibric acid and its derivaties are less effective than the statins when in comes to lowering one’s cholesterol level.

Popular drugs under this kind of cholesterol reducing drugs are:

- Clofibrate - Atormid-S - Gemfibrozil - Lopid - Fenofribrate - Tricor

4. Niacin

Niacin, or vitamin B-3, also is effective in lowering cholesterol levels. Although the normal vitamin dose of niacin is only set at 20 mg for each day, the dose required to reduce cholesterol levels is at least 500 mg each day. Niacin helps reduce cholesterol by inhibiting very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) secretion in the bloodstream.

Warning Signs Of A Heart Attack

Filed Under heart attacks | Comments Off

heart attack
Jim Kapowski asked:

Many individuals who experience signs of a heart attack allow them to go unnoticed. Ignoring the tale-tell signs of a heart attack can cause the problem to be much more serious than necessary, potentially leading to heart failure and even death.

If you think you are experiencing a heart attack, seek medical attention immediately. This is especially true for individuals who have previously had a heart attack or at a greater risk for a heart attack due to medical conditions or current prescriptions.

Remember the old adage, “better safe than sorry” and immediately seek medical help if you can identify a single sign that the pain or discomfort you are experiencing may be a heart attack.

There are a great many myths when it comes to dealing with heart attacks and the symptoms of individuals who are having a heart attack. Many people believe the pain has to be extreme or intense before they should seek medical attention. This is a common myth and completely false, as some sufferers say their heart attack was simply discomforting or mildly painful.

When an individual is having a heart attack, they will probably not look like sufferers in movies or on television. The mental association of heart attacks with individuals clutching their chests and falling to the ground is usually incorrect, as many heart attack victims say their attack began very slowly with an unusual feeling. If left undetected, a heart attack can significantly magnify in scale, but usually heart attacks are not a sudden burst of pain.

Women are prone to having heart attacks without knowing it, putting them at a greater risk for complications or problems. Most women think they are not at risk for a heart attack, but may actually be at a high risk for one. Speak with your doctor about any potential problems with heart attack in your family history or as a result to a current medical issue before dismissing the threat.

There are four main warning signs when it comes to determining whether or not the symptoms you are experiencing may be a heart attack. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, seek medical attention for potential heart attack immediately.

1.Chest pain or discomfort. The chest pain associated with a heart attack may not be overwhelming, but rather an uncomfortable feeling. This discomfort has been said to come and go, feeling like a pressure on the sufferer’s chest or an uncomfortable squeezing feeling. Usually, during a heart attack, any pain or discomfort originates in the center of the victim’s chest.

2.Upper body discomfort. Many heart attack victims relate that they experienced discomfort in their upper body, especially their shoulder, back, jaw, or arms, before the sensation affected their chest. This can also include an unusual sensation in the stomach. For this reason, a heart attack can be easily mistaken for heartburn or a simple stomach ache.

3.Shortness of breath. Usually occurring simultaneously with pain or discomfort in the chest, shortness of breath can be anything from the inability to catch one’s breath to being unable to properly breathe. Many heart attack victims dismissed this symptom as a side effect of whatever activity in which they were participating when the heart attack occurred.

4.Nausea. The feeling of being sick to one’s stomach is commonly associated with early warning symptoms of a heart attack. This symptom coupled with discomfort in the stomach can lead the heart attack to dismiss the symptoms as a simple stomach ache or stomach flu.

Other symptoms can include a general feeling of lightheadedness or dizziness. Many heart attack victims relate they received an overall feeling of unease and had an idea that something was out of the ordinary. Also, many victims have been known to break out in a cold sweat, which can also lead to a misdiagnosis of a flu bug or a less serious problem.

Since heart attacks are quite common in both men and women, you should make it a point to speak to your primary health care provider about your risk for a heart attack. Many individuals are unaware of any potential risk or heart problems until it is too late and they have already experienced a heart attack. By treating any problems before it is too late, you will be more likely to experience the least damage to your heart as possible.

K Boose asked:

I’m just curious to know what i should do during a seizure and what i should do during a heart attack? I know i never restrain somebody during a seizure, and that you place them on their side incase they vomit so they don’t choke, but is there anything else? And for a heart attack im pretty sure there is CPR involved but how would i know when to address CPR and when not too? what should i do during these 2 situations?
