Aimee Whitfill asked:

Extensive research has identified many factors that increase the risk of coronary disease. Some of these risk factors are uncontrollable, such as family history or age, but you can eliminate many contributing factors by making changes in your lifestyle and diet. The more risk factors you have, the greater your chance is for developing coronary disease. Have you ever asked yourself, “Am I at risk for having a heart attack?” Below are some factors that may give you an answer.

Risk Factors That Can’t Be Changed

Age

More than 83 percent of people who die from heart attacks are 65 or older. Additionally, older women who have heart attacks are more likely to die from them in the first few weeks after the attack.

Heredity

Those with family histories of heart attacks are more likely to suffer from coronary disease. African Americans, Mexican Americans, American Indians, native Hawaiians and some Asian Americans have a higher risk of heart disease, due in part to higher rates of obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Gender

Overall, men suffer from heart attacks more often than women, and they tend to have heart attacks at an earlier age. The rate of heart attacks in women increases after menopause, but not to the level found in men.

Risk Factors You Can Control

Tobacco Use

Smokers develop coronary heart disease at two to four times the rate of nonsmokers. Cigarette smoking doubles the risk of sudden cardiac death in patients with coronary heart disease. Exposure to other people’s smoke can increase the risk even in nonsmokers.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure overworks your heart, causing it to thicken and become stiffer. When high blood pressure is combined with high blood cholesterol, obesity, smoking, or diabetes, the risk increases several times.

High Blood Cholesterol

High blood cholesterol levels also increase your risk of coronary heart disease. When combined with other factors, the risk increases. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and grains along with medication can be useful in lowering high blood cholesterol.

Physical Inactivity

A sedentary lifestyle increases the chance for developing coronary heart disease. Regular exercise helps the heart and can also help control obesity, blood cholesterol, and blood pressure.

Being Overweight

High levels of body fat, especially around the waist, lead to an increased risk of developing heart disease. The extra weight increases the heart’s workload. By losing as few as 10 pounds, you can lower your risk.

Diabetes Mellitus

About three quarters of people with diabetes die from coronary heart disease. Even when blood sugar levels are controlled, the risk is increased, and when the levels are not controlled, the risk is even greater.

Stress

The way you respond to stress may also be a contributing factor to developing heart disease. Stress may also affect other factors. For example, people suffering from stress may overeat, begin smoking or smoke more than usual, or drink alcohol to excess. Too much alcohol can produce irregular heartbeats and lead to obesity, as well.

Unfortunately, heart disease usually exhibits no symptoms; therefore, preventive screening is extremely important. Easy, non-invasive tests using color Doppler ultrasound and computer oscillometry can identify your risk of heart disease through determining if you have developed peripheral arterial disease, which causes you to be four to six times more likely to die from a heart attack. These tests can also provide information as to whether you have symptomless abdominal aortic aneurysms, which cause death in 90 percent of patients soon after arriving at the hospital.

Dillon Hideki asked:

It can be a dreadful and very fearful period of time when we wonder whether or not what we experienced was Anxiety, Heart Attack, or a Panic Attack. Anxiety and Panic attacks go almost hand in hand, and share many similar symptoms. High amounts of Anxiety can lead to an attack. But Which one is it?

Unfortunately, there are some similarities between panic and heart attacks. It ranges from the elevated heart rate, chest pains, short breath, and more. This only serves to make it more difficult to tell them apart. Not only this, but just not knowing which one it is and if our life is in danger can produce extraordinary amounts of stress on us.

To always try to remain on the safe side, the first thing we should do is visit a doctor. Do this and rule out the possibility of other complications or a heart attack. Once clear, so much stress will be relieved and this in turn will only serve to help us substantially.

After checking out Anxiety, Heart Attack, and Panic Attacks and find that the likely cause is indeed a panic attack, what can we do about this?

As mentioned above, by getting a checkup and ruling out the possibility of a heart attack or other things, we substantially reduce the amount of stress we endure. This is one of the major keys. Reducing our overall stress.

The next suggestion is to simply take some time out of your schedule and think about the highest sources of stress in your life. Also consider ways in which you can reduce those sources of stress or possibly eliminate them. Doing this will in turn lessen the chances of an attack happening, and can help to regain control of your life.

dsmythe asked:

Many of us suffer from type 2 diabetes. In fact there are about 14 million people in the United States who are in this situation and a good number are being treated with Avandia, a medicine designed to increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin. The drug was first marketed in 1999 by GlaxoSmithKline and it became so popular among physicians that more than 60 million prescriptions have been written.

Avandia, also know as rosiglitazone,  is an oral anti-diabetic agent that also improves glycemic control and reduces circulating insulin levels for those who have Type 2 diabetes and are not insulin-dependent. Avandia is sometimes prescribed with other medicines but is not used for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes.

Diabetes sufferers should know the signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and how to recognize them, including hunger, headache, confusion, irritability, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, tremors, sweating, fast heartbeat, seizure (convulsions), fainting, or coma (severe hypoglycemia can be fatal). Always keep a source of sugar available in case you have symptoms of low blood sugar.

GlaxoSmithKline reported that annual sales of the drug climbed as high as $2.5 billion in 2006. The drug’s patent expires in 2012. The drug appears to be quite versatile as researchers have suggested that it could also help treat some form of Alzheimer’s disease, ulcerative colitis and even malaria.

However, there is also a history of concerns about Avandia, including questions that it might lead to an increased risk of heart attacks.  One scientific study concluded that there was nearly a 40 percent higher chance of a heart attack among Avandia users than those not on the medicine. The company itself has acknowledged there could other side effects, including peripheral edema, or problems in the extremities caused by fluid retention and swelling. Another risk is macular edema, in which there is swelling and protein buildup in the eye.

There have been numerous lawsuits filed over the effects of Avandia and it is easy to find notices about these on the Internet. If you track these over the last few years you will notice a growing number of warnings about the drug and offers by law firms to represent victims.

GlaxoSmithKline is well aware of the problem. The company notified physicians in December, 2006 of the dangerous side effects. However, the problem goes back much farther than that. If you do some research on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration web site you will find that on June 28, 2001, the FDA issued a warning to GlaxoSmithKline. The FDA told the manufacturer it was not being completely forthright in its promotional materials about the risks of the drug.

Then, in April of 2002, The FDA issued another letter about the dangers of Avandia. This one warned healthcare professionals about a change in the warning label on Avandia  in connection with the possibility of excess fluid retention and congestive heart failure in patients taking Avandia.

That was followed in December, 2002, with a letter the FDA sent to GlaxoSmithKline to include another warning paragraph on the Avandia label:

"In postmarketing experience, there have been rare reports of unusually rapid increases in weight and increases in excess of that generally observed in clinical trials. Patients who experience such increases should be assessed for fluid accumulation and volume-related events such as excessive edema and congestive heart failure."

With a history like that those of us taking Avandia should wonder just what we should do. The FDA says that it is conducting a complete investigation but for those who exhibit the symptoms of serious side effects that the FDA warns about will the results of that investigation come in time?

That there are serious, unresolved risks with the use of Avandia goes without question. On its web site the FDA lists the following organizations that are in agreement with this:

American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists American College of Cardiology American Diabetes Association American Heart Association Endocrine Society

“FDA agrees with these organizations and is conducting a thorough investigation,” the government says on its web site.

What will be interesting is whether the government and its investigators or the legal community and its resources get to the bottom of this first.

In 2006, a "prescribing information" paper issued for Avandia from FDA’s MedWatch talks about the increasing evidence of risk of cardiovascular events. This is found on page 13 of the document and highlighted in yellow by MedWatch. MedWatch is the FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.

The longer Avandia and Actos have been on the market, the more evidence of adverse cardiac events, fluid retention and congestive heart failure. All of this culminated this week with the newest study on Avandia which linked it to a risk of heart attacks and death from cardiovascular events.

People who take Avandia or Actos are encouraged to call their doctors for advice on switching.

Richard asked:

Including Heart Attack Symptoms of Women

Some heart attack signs and symptoms are unexpected and severe … the classic “movie” heart attack signs. People will take lightly when they see this kind of signs and symptoms. Generally heart attack starts slowly for both men and women, the only signs and symptoms being gentle pain or discomfort. Most of the times men and women having a heart attack they are sure what the signs and symptoms mean and wait too long before getting help. Women with signs and symptoms of a heart attack typically wait longer, often to their detriment.

Classic signs and symptoms of a heart attack

Chest discomfort. For both men and women, the common signs and symptoms of a heart attack usually involve uneasiness in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes, or that goes away and then comes back. The pain can be stabbing or crushing, or feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, a burning pain or fullness.

Feeling uncomfortable in other areas of the upper body. Other type of heart attack signs and symptoms men and women feel include squeezing pain in the chest or left upper arm that radiates to one or both arms, shoulders, the back, jaw or stomach, neck.

Severe shortness of breath or trouble in breathing. This feeling over and over again accompanies chest discomfort. But it can take place before the chest discomfort.

Other type of heart attack signs and symptoms that can occur without chest pain: For no reason u will have cold sweat for no reason, severe indigestion, vomiting, nausea, light-headedness, weakness, dizziness, extreme fatigue, heart palpitations, fainting, heart palpitations (pounding heartbeats), or a sensation of panic with a feeling of impending doom.

Heart Attack Symptoms of Women

Men report symptoms that are different some women report. For women, they usually have chest pain. But, women may also feel any of the other problems described above, shortness of breath or pain to the arm, especially nausea, shoulder or neck.

Key heart attack tests are:

Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG). This is a graphic record of the electrical activity of the heart as it contracts and relaxes. The ECG can detect abnormal heartbeats, some areas of damage, inadequate blood flow, and heart enlargement.

Blood test. A blood test will be done routinely to check for enzymes or other substances that are released when cells begin to die. These are “markers” of the amount of damage to your heart.

Nuclear scan. This test shows areas of the heart that lack blood flow and are damaged. It also can reveal problems with the heart’s pumping action. A small amount of radioactive material is injected into a vein, usually in the arm. A scanning camera positioned over the heart records whether the nuclear material is taken up by the heart muscle (healthy areas) or not (damaged areas). The camera also can evaluate how well the heart muscle pumps blood. This test can be done during both rest and exercise, enhancing the usefulness of its results.

Coronary angiography This test is used to check blockages and narrowed areas inside coronary arteries. A fine tube (catheter) is threaded through an artery of an arm or leg up into the heart. A dye that shows up on X ray is then injected into the blood vessel, and the vessels and heart are filmed as the heart pumps. The picture is called an angiogram or arteriogram.

Alan James asked:

Everything has its own limit if you become overweight you will lose your natural energy because being obese means giving invitation a number of health associated problems. Out of many one is heart attack. You will have noticed overweight persons suffering from heart attacks. If you want to avoid this problem, go for lap band surgery. It is only one way to decrease the chances of heart attack. But for this you will have to qualify the norms of lap band surgery established by NIH. If you successfully qualify the norms of NIH, you will be able to get lap band surgery.

If your waist size is 45 inches plus, you come in the series of fat men while the women who has 35 inches plus waist size she is also overweight. Having such a waist size can contribute to cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance syndrome.

Every year you can see lots of premature death. One Effective reason behind these premature deaths is overweight. Besides of Lap Band Surgery and Heart Attacksy many other diseases like coronary heart disease can also affect you. If you continuously go for exercise, you can lose 5% to 10% weight.

You can find certain types of cancer, gallbladder disease, liver, sleep apnea and pregnancy complications. Overweight affect the patient physically as well as mentally because the person who has overweight often has to face humiliation in the company of friends. An overweight person is not liked by the persons. Friends make a joke of an overweight person. Such situations become very unenduring for an overweight person. If you are planning to get lap band surgery done, first of all you should look for an experienced surgeon. For finding a good surgeon you can take the help of internet.

Women And Heart Attacks

heart attack
Vida Curnutt asked:

Here is the story of one woman’s experience with a heart attack.

“I had a completely unexpected heart attack at about 10:30 pm with NO prior exertion; NO prior emotional trauma that one would suspect might’ve brought it on. I was sitting all snugly and warm on a cold evening, reading an interesting story my friend had sent me.  A moment later, I felt that awful sensation of indigestion, when you’ve been in a hurry and grabbed a bite of sandwich and washed it down with a dash of water, and that hurried bite seems to feel as if you’ve swallowed a golf ball going down the esophagus in slow motion, and it is most uncomfortable. You realize you shouldn’t have gulped it down so fast and needed to chew it more thoroughly, and this time drinks a glass of water to hasten its progress down to the stomach.  This was my initial sensation-the only trouble was that I hadn’t taken a bite of anything since about 5:00 p.m.

After that had seemed to subside, the next sensation was like little squeezing motions that seemed to be racing up my SPINE (hindsight, it was probably my aorta spasming), gaining speed as they continued  racing up and under my sternum (breast bone, where one presses rhythmically when administering CPR). This fascinating process continued on into my throat and branched out into both jaws.

AAH!! NOW I stopped puzzling about what was happening. We all have read and/or heard about pain in the jaws being one of the signals of an MI happening, haven’t we? I said aloud to myself, “Dear God, I think I’m having a heart attack!”

I lowered the foot rest, started to take a step and fell on the floor instead I thought to myself “If this is a heart attack, I shouldn’t be walking into the next room where the phone is or anywhere else but, on the other hand, if I don’t, nobody will know that I need help, and if I wait any longer I may not be able to get up in another moment”.

I pulled myself up with the arms of the chair, walked slowly into the  next room and dialed the paramedics … I told the lady who answered  that I thought I was having a heart attack due to the pressure  building under the sternum and radiating into my jaws. I didn’t feel hysterical or afraid, just stated the facts. She said she was sending  the paramedics over immediately, asked if the front door was near to  me, and if so, to unbolt the door and then lie down on the floor where  they could see me when they came in.

I then laid down on the floor as instructed and lost consciousness,  as I don’t remember the medics coming in, their examination, lifting  me onto a gurney or getting me in to their ambulance, or hearing the  call they made on the way, but I did briefly awaken  when we arrived and saw that the cardiologist was already there in his  surgical blues and cap, helping the medics pull my stretcher out of  the ambulance. He was bending over me asking questions (probably something like “Have you taken any medications?”) but I couldn’t make my mind interpret what he was saying, or form an answer, and nodded off again, not waking up until the cardiologist and his partner had already threaded the teeny angiogram balloon up my femoral artery into the aorta and into my heart where they installed 2 side by side stints to hold open my right coronary artery.

I know it sounds as if all my thinking and actions at home must have taken at least 20-30 minutes before calling the paramedics, but actually it took perhaps 4-5 minutes before the call, and they are only minutes away from my home, and my cardiologist was already to go to the OR in his scrubs and get going on restarting my heart (which had stopped somewhere between my arrival and the procedure) and installing the stints”.

Why have I written all of this to you with so much detail? The more we know the better chance we could survive.

People who suffer illnesses or tragedies unfortunately set themselves up, saying, “It can’t happen to me”. It can happen to any of us, which is why we should take the steps in our youth to prevent illnesses and tragedies.

Exercise is the leading element we have offered to us in life that helps to reduce any disease, emotional reactions and so on. When you sit around feeling anxious, depressed, you are working toward worse health conditions. Reverse your actions and take the steps live longer by exercising each day.
